Vitamin B Arrests Alzheimers

Could a preventative treatment to the threat of Alzheimers disease finally have been found? Well, a study from Oxford University, England, has found that people who take a daily vitamin B supplement are less likely to succumb to the memory loss disease. Providing the vitamin supplement is at least begun to be taken during the early stages of memory failure then the humble vitamin B tablet looks like providing a suitable treatment for the condition. According to the report some participants in the study saw their decline in memory function halved!

Alzheimers disease.

Alzheimer’s disease - take vitamin B to help prevent it.

Alzheimers disease is one of the many conditions whose major symptom is a loss of memory, more than would be expected for the persons age. Although less than one million people in the USA currently suffer from Alzheimers disease, incidences of it are on the increase and the older you become the more likely you are to suffer from it. As we get older memory loss (dementia) is simply one of those ageing processes that it was thought we all had to put up with.  However, with the possibility of any form of dementia becoming Alzheimers, taking vitamin B as soon as any degree of dementia occurs would seem to be, at the very least, prudent. The reason for this is reinforced when most cases of Alzheimers disease are not diagnosed until effects such as the loss of short-term memory and difficulty making decisions become more serious. Alzheimers disease, as opposed to a minor loss in memory, will ultimately affect all cognitive functions; resulting in the patient losing the ability to have any memory. This in turn often leads to the loss of speech, incontinence and personality changes.

What the vitamin B does.

The reason some people start to lose their memory is simply that as they get older their brain starts to shrink. This shrinkage is partly due to high levels of homocysteine, an amino acid, in the blood. The study found that taking a daily supplement of folic acid and vitamins B6 and B12 significantly reduced this shrinkage. Those with very high levels of homocysteine found that the vitamin supplement halved the rate of their brain shrinkage!
